Currently the convention and exhibition industry is facing a number of challenges. One of the challenges is the lack of suitable factory and supporting facilities. While most exhibition materials are fairly large in size, factories in Hong Kong cannot fulfill the industry’s need. Therefore, a great number of exhibition productions are relocated to mainland China. The skills and technology involved are also transferred to mainland China and the only procedure left in Hong Kong is the assembly process. This resulted in increased levels of underemployment in exhibition sector and thus face serious challenge in attracting newcomers to the industry.
Two exhibition venues of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre will be extended in the near future. There will be huge demand of manpower for constructions. In order to bring the development of exhibition industry back to Hong Kong, the profession requires support from the government. It can create more jobs opportunities and promote the development of the industry, and thus brings enormous benefit to the economy and society of Hong Kong.
Most exhibitions in Hong Kong only last for a few days. In order to attract visitors, exhibitors often set up booth with splendid decorations. However, most of the exhibition boards and decorations will be abandoned after the exhibition, which is environmental unfriendly. This is believed that effective site planning could promote environmental awareness among members. The Event, Exhibition & Display Association of Hong Kong will propose to the government to plan suitable zones for factory and warehouse and thus the industry can recycle, refurbish or reuse exhibition materials. Not only such measures are more cost-effective, but also raise the industry’s environmental awareness.
